Stop At:   Bodbe Monastery The Monastery of St. Nino at Bodbe is a Georgian Orthodox monastic complex located 2 km from the town of Sighnaghi, Kakheti, Georgia. Originally built in the 9th century, it has been significantly remodeled, especially in the 17th century. The monastery now functions as a nunnery and is one of the major pilgrimage sites in Georgia, due to its association with St. Nino, the 4th-century female evangelist of Georgians, whose relics are shrined there. The Bodbe Monastery is nested among tall Cypress trees on a steep hillside overlooking the Alazani Valley, where it commands views of the Greater Caucasus mountains. In 1924, the Soviet government closed down the monastery and converted it into a hospital. In 1991, after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the Bodbe monastery was resumed as a convent. Restoration works were carried out between 1990 and 2000 and resumed in 2003. Jvari Monastery is a sixth century Georgian Orthodox monastery near Mtskheta, eastern Georgia. Along with other historic structures of Mtskheta, it is listed as a World Heritage site by UNESCO. Duration: 1 hour Admission Ticket Free Stop At:  The City- Mtskheta Mtskheta is a city in Mtskheta-Mtianeti province of Georgia. One of the oldest cities of Georgia, it is located approximately 20 kilometres north of Tbilisi, at the confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers. Visit Jvari Monastery The masterpiece of Early Christian Orthodox architecture Jvari Monastery is dated 585-604 cc AD. Located on the hill top near the town Mtskheta, it is listed in UNESCO World Heritage Site list in 1994. The name is translated as the Monastery of the Cross. According to traditional accounts, in the early 4th century Saint Nino stayed here to pray and erected a wooden cross on Mtskheta’s highest hill. The church was built on the crest of a cliff at a confluence of the rivers Mtkvari and Aragvi. It is a representative of the tetra conch architectural type that was popular not only in Georgia but also in Byzantine world. Jvari served as a model for many other churches in the country. Unusual and varied relief sculptures decorate its façades. The importance of Jvari complex increased over time and attracted many pilgrims. According to the legend pilgrims visiting the site shed tears while praying and the nearby natural lake was named the Lake of tears. The harmonious relationship between the landscape, architectural forms and divisions, the well-thought-out disposition of decorative elements and splendid relieves carved on big slabs of a stone give the south and east walls special expressiveness. Among the reliefs of the east wall are found the portraits of the kings who built the church. Included in UNESCO world heritage sights, the monument is still used for major celebrations. Located 70 km from Tbilisi, Zhinvali is striking in its beauty and in relief it is very similar to the Scandinavian fjords. Back in 1723, King Teimuraz and the Kakhetians hid here from the attacks of the Avars, who unsuccessfully tried to besiege and seize the fortress. Ananuri (end of the 16th century), the main stronghold on the Georgian Military Highway, was very popular with travelers, as it is located at the confluence of the Aragvi and the Wajathevi River. It is unique and the fact that the territory of Stepantsminda is a temple called “Gergeti”. It was built in the 14th century. The construction of the temple is worth special attention, because all materials were manually raised to a huge height. After joining the small rivers, descents a third, 20 meters -high waterfall. Vardzia is a cave site in southern Georgia dating back to 12th century, excavated from the slopes of the Erusheti Mountain on the left bank of the Mtkvari River. Excavations have shown that the area of Vardzia was inhabited even earlier during the Bronze Age. There you can find bell tower, main church, cave dwellings, rooms, chapels, pharmacy and wine cellars. Beyond the bell tower the complex rises to nineteen tiers, with steps leading to a cemetery. Infrastructure includes access tunnels, water facilities, and provision for defence. Vardzia has been submitted for future inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a Cultural Site.
Next stop Rabati castle in Akhaltsikhe
We go to Rabati Castle, which is a medieval castle complex of Asian style in Akhaltsikhe. It was built in the 13th-century and developed under the influence of different cultures over subsequent centuries, which is reflected in the architecture. The fortress occupies about 7 hectares and is divided into two sections: modern and historical. In the new part, there is a restaurant, hotel, cafes, and shops. In the old part of the fortress, there is the Ahmediyeh Mosque, a church, a family castle of Jakeli, and a historical museum. After visiting Rabati Castle, we will have a lunch break.
